Understanding multiple answer question scoring
September 24, 2020The scoring of Multiple Answer questions is often difficult for both instructors and students to understand. In this type of question there can be multiple correct responses and to earn full marks the student must (a) select all the correct responses, and (b) select none of the incorrect responses. Every selected response receives some type of score ( + or – ) while unselected responses receive no score. A student will never receive a negative score on the question, though mathematically they may have earned one by selecting more incorrect than correct responses. Instead of using a Multiple Answer question format, instructors are urged to transfer the same question into a simple Multiple Choice format by including the original responses as a numbered list within the question prompt, then offering different combinations of list numbers as the question’s response options.
