Responsibilities
I learned how to manage and coordinate an online health promotion portal. At Wellness Works, we provide a 6 week worksite wellness program called Walk With Ease. We reached out to businesses to onboard the program and prepared it for the Iowa Department of Public Health. I also learned how to manage and coordinate an online community health platform. GivePulse is an online tool used to manage volunteers and interns for a community organization and we use it for many different county leaders in Iowa. I took training as well to learn how to become a health coach and was added to the Cydekicks team.
Accomplishments
One of the greatest accomplishments I had during my internship was with learning how to become a Health Coach. I spent 6 weeks taking lessons on how to become a health coach and participated in practice sessions with my supervisor. After the training I got added to the Cydekicks team and am now an option as a health coach.
Learning experience
I learned a few great lessons during my internship. For starters, I learned how to become a better communicator. Whether this was during meetings or throughout the work week, I became more sufficient at reaching out to people and progressing projects virtually. Another great lesson was learning how to take initiative, many tasks at Wellness Works required me to take initiative and work on things that were not asked of me.
What advice would you give?
My advice would be to learn what fields in community and public health interest you the most. There are so many options for this major and there are so many different areas of interest. Finding what interests you most can lead you to the most rewarding internship. Wellness Works is a great option for people that are interested in public health programming and I would highly recommend getting in contact with Dr. Welk if you want to learn more about it.
