Responsibilities

As an intern for Hilton Head Health, you can expect to stay pretty busy! Our daily schedule consists of things like: maintain organization of fitness equipment, inventory first aid kits, transporting guests and hosting recreational events/activities/excursions (kayaking, paddle boarding, dolphin tours, shopping, movie/game night), every morning and evening the interns are responsible for taking guests on an (optional) relaxing sunset/sunrise beach walk, measurement screenings, teach group fitness classes, assist group fitness classes, and provide exercise recommendations and modifications. Every intern is expected to teach 4 classes: treading, which is a guided cardio class. Hydro circuit, a strength circuit in the pool. Ultra circuit, a strength circuit. As well as body basics, a 15 minute class to teach guest about what you can do with resistance bands.

Accomplishments

Every intern has the option to complete intern projects such as; creating your own workout class or lecture to teach to the guests. I think my biggest accomplishments were; brining a cardio boxing class to Hilton Head Health because it ended up being such a hit that they kept it on the weekly schedule! Additionally, the lecture I created about functional fitness was such a big hit that my supervisor wanted to lead the class after my departure.

What advice would you give?

Take the risk! Moving away from home is scary, but this place will make you feel like home almost instantly. Everyone is so welcoming and kind! If this is a type of internship you’re interested in, go in with confidence! It’s a really competitive selection process, and they only select 2 every semester. So get your applications in early, and always go the extra mile!
