Responsibilities
My responsibilities included monitoring patient's vitals, MET level, power output, resistance, and RPE. This data is entered into a program for easy tracking. I assisted in developing patient treatment plans based on their diagnosis and ability to perform exercise. I taught patients about stretching and weight exercises, how to use the machines, and answering any questions they have. I also communicated with patients and connected with them on a personal level.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment was being able to teach the patients and help them remain positive given the circumstances of why they were in cardiac rehab. Seeing the patients satisfied is a great feeling. I have grown professionally to interact with my patients by guiding them to achieve their optimal health.
Learning experience
I learned a lot of things during my internship. One of the most important things I learned was how to communicate with the patients in a way that they can understand. Each patient is different, so being able to change the way I communicate with them helped a lot. Another lesson I learned was how to develop care plans professionally. I was able to learn about a lot of different diagnoses and what they entail.
What advice would you give?
Stay ahead of your work, learn what is expected of you, be punctual, don't be afraid to ask questions, build a good rapport with patients/clients, and you get out of it what you are willing to put in.
