Responsibilities

I helped run the various conferences that we host like the School Nurse Conference and Breastfeeding Conference. I went to various tabling events for either our department of Advocacy and Outreach at Blank or for our Child Passenger Safety Coordinator table. I helped with various projects that everyone needed done throughout the office such as posters, putting things together, printing, PowerPoints, etc. I helped keep a running list of people interested in taking the Child Passenger Safety Technician course for my supervisor. I got my CPS certification and now help with car seat checks and help run car seat check events at Bob Brown Chevrolet. I also helped with our partnership with Des Moines Parks and Recreation. We brought education about water safety, fire safety, gun safety, helmet safety, and medicine safety to kids who were at the various camps at different parks.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment was earning my CPS certification to be a Child Passenger Safety Technician. It was a 3 week course and I had a lot of fun and cannot wait to help people with their car seats to keep their children safe!

Learning experience

I learned that there is a lot more that goes into car seats then people think and most people need help of should get their seats checked. I also learned that kids don't know a ton about safety and it is really important to try different methods to get the education to stick in their minds.

What advice would you give?

Whatever you want to do use their network that you have and the people around you to help secure your dream job. Be open to different experiences because no matter if it goes well or not there will be something you can take away from doing it.
