Responsibilities
During the internship I worked with junior high to high school level athletes with strength and conditioning. They would be put through 12 weeks of programming, which the last 4 I had to program and then after the 12 weeks block they would do testing. We test them in vertical and broad jump, 10 yard sprint, 5-10-5, front squat, bench press, and hex bar deadlift 3 rep maxes. There also adult classes that are taught along with any personal training you want to do in nonclass hours.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment while at EP would be getting a job as afternoon head coach a month into working there. I enjoy the athletes I get to work at and they have really come to like me as a coach and trust me with their progress off the field and that trust only pushes me to be a better coach and get them the training they need.
Learning experience
The internship is something that will really tell you if this is the field you want to be in and can push you to your limits at times. They really can't teach you real world experience in the class setting and not sure if there is a way to actually do that but if possible I think it would help people choose their majors easier to see little bits of what some jobs are like before doing the internship and not enjoying what they thought was their future career.
What advice would you give?
Take an unpaid internship over a summer to really get a feel for the job you are thinking about before choosing a place for the graded internship.
