Responsibilities
During my internship, I had the opportunity to perform biometric health screenings across various cities in Iowa, assist with community blood profiles, and participate in health fairs at hospitals throughout the Des Moines area. In addition to these hands-on experiences, I also contributed to a range of office projects and administrative tasks, further supporting the team's efforts to promote community health and wellness.
Accomplishments
One of my biggest accomplishments during my internship has been improving my skills in biometric health screenings. When I first started, I felt unsure and nervous about performing tasks like blood pressure readings, finger pricks, and waist measurements. But after participating in multiple screenings, I’ve become much more confident and efficient. I’ve learned how to use the equipment correctly, communicate clearly with participants, and adapt to different situations and personalities. It feels rewarding to play a role in helping people better understand their health, and it’s now one of the parts of the internship I enjoy the most.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson I’ve learned during my internship is that being a part of someone’s health journey even in the smallest way can make a big impact. Whether I was checking someone in for a blood profile, taking their blood pressure, or simply offering reassurance during a screening, I came to realize how much these small moments matter. Many people shared personal stories or asked questions, and I could tell they appreciated having someone there who cared. It showed me that even brief interactions can contribute to someone feeling seen, supported, and motivated to take better care of their health. This experience has taught me not to underestimate the power of small acts in healthcare.
What advice would you give?
If you're starting a kinesiology internship at Iowa State, my biggest piece of advice is to stay open-minded and take every opportunity to learn no matter how small the task may seem. Whether you're doing office work, helping with health related opportunities, or working on a long-term project, everything is a chance to build your skills and confidence. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take initiative, and be flexible. The more you put into the experience, the more you’ll get out of it. Most importantly, remember that you’re making a difference, even in the smallest interactions.
