Responsibilities

I supervised four one-hour exercise classes per day for patients with cardiac diagnoses. Some of my major responsibilities were to lead warmups with stretches and hand weights, take patients’ blood pressures before, during, and after exercise, and monitor patients’ heart rhythms. A big part of my job was to interact with patients and create personalized exercise prescriptions for them. I also assisted the nurses with other office duties like documentation and class prep.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was gaining the ability to work closely with patients. When my internship started, I was not super confident talking to/working with patients. By the end of my internship, I was extremely confident and comfortable working with patients.

Learning experience

I learned a lot of lessons during my internship. Do not give up on people. It is our job to help others. Building a real connection with somebody makes it a lot easier to work with them. A lot of my patients have told me they don’t like when their doctor is a robot. I make a great deal of effort to interact with them in a friendly way.

What advice would you give?

There are a lot of options and career paths in this major. One piece of advice I have is to explore a lot of different options and to take every opportunity you get. It sounds cliche but if you put yourself out there and put in genuine effort, you will be successful.
