Li-Shan Chou leads kinesiology as professor and chair
In his research, he applies engineering and mechanical theories to enhance understanding of mechanisms that govern human locomotion and factors related to the increased incidence of falls in older adults and patients with movement disorders.
His research focuses on interactions among the muscular skeletal system, the brain and central nervous system, and the sensory system when presented with injuries, deficits, or interventions — and how they affect the outcomes of human movement. His team has published more than 110 peer-reviewed journal papers.
He earned doctoral and master’s degree in engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at Tatung Institute of Technology in Taipei, Taiwan.
Chou is a fellow of the American Society of Biomechanics and president of the 3D-Analysis of Human Movement Technical Group of International Society of Biomechanics. He also is the associate/section editor of three American research journals, Gait and Posture, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology, as well as two biomechanics/biomedical engineering journals based in his native country, Taiwan.
