Health Coaching Initiatives
The Physical Activity and Health Promotion lab has established a line of health coaching programming that provides students with opportunities to receive training in motivational interviewing and opportunities to gain personal experience in health coaching through supervised programming on campus and in the community.
Programming in the department is coordinated through an upper-division course (KIN 494A/B: Practicum in Motivational Interviewing) but students can also take a brief introductory course through the Learn@ISU platform. Students that complete training are eligible to connect to other programming through the ExerCYse outreach program or the Wellness Works outreach program.
Programming provides valuable experiences for students interested in careers in health coaching, personal training, or pre-health professions focused on 1:1 patient applications (e.g. physical therapy, physician assistant, etc.).
